As a retired psychologist, I have studied, perused and used many theories in the field of psychotherapy and treatment. One of those theories that always intrigued me was the “self-fulfilling prophecy.” Simplified, it says that if you believe it will happen, it most likely will. Through your reactions and behavior, you will make it happen. That explanation, however, you won’t find in a book.
Officially, a self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that, directly or indirectly, causes itself to become true by the terms of the very prophecy itself. This is caused by a type of positive feedback between the belief and the behavior. It is a well-documented effect, primarily human in nature, and can be traced back in time, written in the literature of ancient Greece and India. The 20th century sociologist Robert K. Merton first coined the phrase “self-fulfilling prophecy,” and formulated its structure and consequences. In his book, Social Theory and Social Structure,” he states as an example “… when Roxanna falsely believes that her marriage will fail, her fears of such a failure actually cause the marriage to fail.” So, in other words, a self-fulfilling prophecy is the tendency of our expectations to foster behavior that is consistent with our expectations.
Now, if we take a minute and look back upon our own lives, we might find a few first-hand examples that clearly elucidate this phenomenon. I can recall an example from my own experiences: When I was in graduate school at Hahnemann University, here in the great City of Brotherly Love, I had a course on the biological causes of human behavior (oh, I forget the proper name of the course…). Having not had too many hard science courses up to that time, I feared that I’d not be able to keep up, given the incredible amount of work, reading, and materials it required. It did, as a matter of fact, turn out to be a challenging course. The first half of the course was really hell, as I procrastinated until the last minute, and the end result is that I barely passed the midterm with a 67, scored on “the curve.” Thus, prophecy fulfilled. For the second half of the course, it was “do or die.” I incorporated the help of my then girlfriend (now, my wife…), and with her assistance, I scored a 98% on the final exam. I passed the course, and learned, first hand, about the self-fulfilling prophecy.
The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy and 2012:
The year 2012 is fraught with many claims of impending disaster, and if you are reading this article, then you are most likely aware of the Mayan calendar and what has been “interpreted” as its meaning. Based on only one codex (out of many that were destroyed), it seems that 2012 is destined to be a very bad year. It has been written that there is to be everything from magnetic pole shifts, to huge tsunamis, to meteor impacts, to alien invasion. Between you and me, I wouldn’t mind a little “out of this world” advice, so I wouldn’t mind a visit from the Nordics, or Arcturians (humor added…).
So, when you put it all together, this represents the potential “recipe for disaster” I hope we can avoid. And, I dare not speak of it too much, but I do want to shout from the mountaintops to beware of the danger of fear itself. You finally realize, after studying all of this 2012 and conspiracy stuff, that we really can change the world, and it all depends on how we see, interpret and understand the world. If we hear about, and buy into those many prophecies and predictions, and we become fearful, and withdrawal from daily life and hide ourselves away, we will never learn how to understand and truly interpret all of those cryptic messages the Mayans left for us. Then, at the worst, we might be able to adopt a “wait and see” attitude, and still prepare for the worst and, at the same time, hope for the best. If that makes any sense at all…
Most important, and I have said this before in articles, we must keep our heads. We must not allow ourselves to foolishly follow the lemmings off the edge of the cliff. By that, I mean we must stay informed. Read the news, from the world over, from as many sources, as many countries, and in as many languages we can (Google Translator can help with this last one…).
Do not rely on CNN as your only source of information, but surely include it in the list of news sources you put together, both mainstream and alternative, national and international, and I repeat – stay informed! Learn how to put two and two together. Look for patterns. Most importantly, trust your gut. Your gut is one of the most powerful tools in your personal arsenal. Some call it intuition, others, clairvoyance. I like to call it my gut. We all have one, and unfortunately, we tend to interpret its signals as indigestion or heartburn. Learn to relax and to open yourself up to your most inner thoughts and your subconscious. Don’t take my word for it; train yourself. Learn Yoga, or Tai-Chi. Your gut will open up and speak volumes. But please, I beg you – do not cower in a corner, educate yourself. The internet offers us so much information. At the end of this article, I will supply you with a short list of sites that will get you started on your journey to awareness. Welcome to the realm of the informed, the awakened, and the wise.
The Alternative Scenario:
The alternative is this: People will fear the approach of December, 2012. They will do one of the following: (1) They will fear their impending doom, run for shelter, and fall hopelessly into a state of paranoia. These folks might even bear arms and nervously fire away at anything or anybody they perceive as a threat. They will become selfish, and they will hoard the things they think are important. They will either turn psychotic, and/or dead in a short time. The second possibility is (2) that they will adopt a “devil may care” attitude. Their logic is something like “the world is ending anyway, so let’s do what we want, when we want, and party until the bitter end. Worse yet, both of these groups confront one another, and social chaos ensues. There is a third group I neglected to point out: those people who couldn’t care less. Their motto might be bring it on…
Please, if you will, recall Y2K. Most of us alive now were awake and aware then. Remember what happened? Right. Absolutely nothing. Despite all of the dire predictions and prophecies, threats of annihilation, all of the electronics in the world failing – nothing. On January 1st, 2000, life went on as if nothing had occurred. In the long run, remember to balance fear with reason. It’s no sin, and it might just save our asses – from ourselves.
List of Links to get you started:
Okay, my dear friends, this is a short, but information-rich list of sites and blogs I highly recommend to get you started on your journey. Search deeply, learn all you can, and feel proud of yourselves for taking that first step toward awareness.
I do, however, recommend you take breaks from all of this stuff in order to avoid insanity, isolation, disconnectedness, estrangement, and the other effects of sponging up this information. It can drive you nutz!! Remember, you have a life above and beyond... Dont lose your support system!
